Welcome to my site. I’m a professor of history at Cleveland State University, a regional public university in northeast Ohio.
With over 25 years experience in higher ed, over a decade of that spent in administrative roles, I am deeply committed to making the workplace of higher education a supportive, constructive, and meaningful endeavor. As a historian with an active research agenda, I am particularly committed to the vital role of history and the humanities in higher ed.
In my blog posts and publications in Inside Higher Ed and the Times Higher Education I advance ideas and practices to promote these goals. You can also follow me on Twitter @school_tales for similar content.
I offer meetings, workshops, and professional development services to help faculty be effective administrators, to promote the cohesiveness and effectiveness of academic departments through strong curricula and programming, and to enhance the visibility of history and the humanities through curricular and programmatic initiatives. For more information on my consulting work click the “Consultant” tab above or click here.
I also maintain an active research agenda, focused on the study of the significance of nuns and convents in Europe between 1400 and 1650. Learn more about that work by clicking the “Scholar” tab above or click here.
And because one of the things I write about and try to achieve is having a job AND a life, you can expect occasional tweets about running, cooking, cocktails, travel, and baseball.
